<image:title>Voices - EKY: A Tabaru Tribesman - Eky is from the Tabaru tribe, custodians of a vast, intact rainforest landscape in North Halmahera. For generations, his people have lived from hunting, gardening, and small-scale agriculture. The forest is not a backdrop to life — it is life.</image:title>
<image:caption>“Before I was old enough for school, I often went into the rainforest with my father,” Eky recalls. “He taught me how to find the nesting mounds of megapodes, how to search for their eggs, and how to hunt animals using simple traps. At night, we slept in small shelters we built ourselves, with roofs made from palm leaves.” Those early experiences formed more than practical skills. They instilled respect — for elders, for safety, and for the forest itself. One lesson stood above all others: never enter the jungle alone. Knowledge, in Tabaru culture, is shared and passed down carefully.</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - Into the Congo: with Alex Bigwood - Capturing bonobos on camera</image:title>
<image:caption>The primary goal was to film bonobos in the wild—a rare and challenging subject that few have managed to document successfully. The team brought a range of tools and techniques into the field: camera traps tucked into key areas, drones flying just through the canopy, long lenses capturing moments from afar, and an ambitious world-first attempt to film bonobos high in the treetops—at eye level in their own domain. “It was relentless,” Alex says. “They’re fast, they’re elusive, and the terrain is brutal. Bonobos are considered one of the hardest animals in the world to film, and for good reason. You might be waist-deep in swamp water, mud sucking at your boots, vines catching your pack, and you’re still trying to keep pace with an animal that can vanish into the trees in seconds.” The physical demands were enormous. The camera operators and field team carried everything with them—camera gear, tripods, batteries, water, food, and safety kits—often over many hours of hiking through thick, humid forest. “The jungle doesn’t care if you're tired. Everything’s heavy, it’s always wet, and you’re constantly working in low light under the canopy. But when it works—when you catch a glimpse of them through the trees, or get that perfect moment on film—the crew become ecstatic, and all the hardship melts away. It takes a unique individual to do that job.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - The Invisible Leader: Manage Risk Without Saying a Word - In the world of jungle expeditions, leadership doesn't always come with a whistle or a radio. It often comes in the form of a subtle nod, a deliberate step, or the simple act of remaining calm when everything else isn’t. True jungle leadership isn’t loud — it’s quiet competence. In remote, high-risk environments, the best guides often lead without saying a word. They know that shouting instructions or micromanaging every step isn’t just exhausting — it can be counterproductive. Instead, they influence through behavior, body language, habits, and emotional tone. We call this invisible leadership, and in the jungle, it may be the most important skill a guide can develop.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - The Invisible Leader: Manage Risk Without Saying a Word - Emotional Leadership: The Underestimated Factor Jungle guiding is emotional leadership as much as it is logistical. The invisible leader is the emotional barometer of the team. When people are cold, wet, or scared, they watch you. They look for micro-cues that say: Is this normal? Are we okay? You don’t need to tell them everything’s fine. You just need to act like it is. A calm tone during gear checks. A joke over a fire-starting struggle. A patient demeanor when someone slows down. These are powerful tools that defuse tension, foster resilience, and build team trust. It doesn’t mean suppressing your feelings. It means channeling them in a way that keeps others safe — mentally and emotionally.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - The Invisible Leader: Manage Risk Without Saying a Word - Leadership Without Needing Credit Invisible leaders don’t need to be the center of attention. Their ego isn’t tied to being right or being praised — it’s tied to the mission, to the safety of their team, and to the success of the expedition. They train harder than everyone else. They study maps before the team even wakes up. They help carry weight without asking for thanks. They guide people to make their own smart decisions — and step back when needed. This style of leadership creates self-sufficient teams, not followers. And that’s what the jungle demands — adaptability, shared responsibility, and respect.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - How Jungle Guides International Is Changing the Narrative. - In the remote, beautiful, and often unforgiving jungle regions of the world, access to professional training in leadership, safety, and first aid has historically been out of reach for most local people. Often, these experiences arrive from abroad, are taught exclusively to foreign tourists, and leaves little lasting benefit for the communities who actually live and work in these regions every day.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Jungle Guides International (JGI), we are working to change that — not by replacing what exists, but by supporting and strengthening it through long-term, inclusive solutions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - How Jungle Guides International Is Changing the Narrative. - Who We Are and Why This Matters</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Alex Bigwood, and I’ve spent most of my adult life working in the field of expeditionary leadership and remote operations following my service in the military. Over the years, I’ve seen a pattern repeat itself: training and eco-tourism programs brought in from the outside, focused primarily on tourists, with limited local involvement. I founded Jungle Guides International to not only provide world leading Jungle Specific Training and certification, but to help help shift this model — to create a system that prioritizes local leadership, sustainable development, and long-term trust-building within communities. We’ve worked hard to build a legally sound, internationally aligned structure. JGI is headquartered in Canada, with operations expanding globally. Our training aligns with medical and professional standards across different countries, where available, while remaining legally compliant and globally credible. Over the coming months, we will introduce our team from around the world, and the specialist skills and knowledge they are working to make available to you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - How Jungle Guides International Is Changing the Narrative. - Beyond Training: Supporting Community Growth & Building Trust, Step by Step</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to technical certifications, we’re also making free business coaching available to communities seeking to enter the eco-tourism sector. For many jungle regions, tourism presents a powerful opportunity — but only if local people are included, trained, and supported in growing their own tourism businesses. Our goal is not to compete with existing operators, but to add value where access has been limited — creating space for new leaders, entrepreneurs, and initiatives to thrive. We understand that this kind of change takes time. We are new. And skepticism is both normal and healthy. That’s why we’ve begun by offering free, internationally-aligned first aid training in several countries throughout 2025 — to prove our commitment, deliver real value upfront, and earn the trust of the communities we’re here to serve. This is a long-term vision. One that will grow, evolve, and strengthen with support from government agencies, training institutions, community leaders, and experienced operators already on the ground.</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Guide Training: Chagres National Park, Panama - Next there is a movement down to my right on the jungle floor. But I can’t see what. My foot touches something. There’s another movement. But there are palm fronds in the way, leaf litter all over the ground, sweat in my eyes, so at first I just plod on a couple of steps. Then over my shoulder I noticed one of the local Panamanian guides, Eugenio, dash downhill away from me shouting, “Cuidado!!” I still haven’t clocked any danger and something Rick, another of our expedition guides, comes to mind. He mentioned that when you're swinging your machete it’s possible you’ll trim a leaf that has a wasp nest attached to the underside and the best thing to do is move very slowly, backwards away from the trail. Move fast and they attack you. So I slowly take 2 or 3 steps back whilst trying to figure out why my mate had run off down the hill.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Guide Training: Chagres National Park, Panama - At this point I learned more about Mr. Bushmaster. Rick explained that it is a pit viper and the most feared snake in the rainforest. Because they are so feared, they are also widely persecuted and killed, so Rick said you have a better chance getting up close to a jaguar than a bushmaster this size. This one was between 2.5 and 3 metres long, so 8 to 10 feet. Bushmasters had been known to be barked at by a dog on the edge of a village, get pissed off with the dog, chase it back into town and then strike at anybody who got in its way. In its aggressive mode it could advance quicker than you could run, and instances had been recorded where one snake caused multiple fatalities in one attack. I was grazing on my trail mix and getting water down my neck as I learned these things. Slowly neurons began to fire in my machete dulled brain. Good thing I had snake gaiters on I suggested to Rick, indicating the protective sheaths outside my hiking pants. Not really, he replied, a snake that big would just bite you in the groin or stomach he said matter-of-factly. Right, I said. “You lucky Irish bastard,” chipped in Alex, our other expedition leader. Indeed, I reflected as fear and adrenaline started to flow through me as it should have done had I spotted the bloody snake in the first place.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Guide Training: Chagres National Park, Panama - I wanted out of the jungle. It’s hard to fully communicate how uncomfortable the jungle is in the wet season. I hadn’t been dry in days. You can try hanging clothes, even fast-drying technical material ones, up to dry but the dampness and humidity is just too much. Nothing evaporates. Wet socks in wet squelchy muddy boots. Wet underpants in wet hiking pants. Wet grips on machete and hiking poles. Wet shirts wearing under the heavy wet straps of your heavy wet backpack, creating heat rashes all over your shoulders and sides. The Jungle Guru Rick had explained to us at the outset that this was the reason to run a training course in the wet season. Maximum discomfort and challenge. He talked about the importance of gear choices and gear management. Top of this list was ‘mastering your system,’ as he called it, for setting up your hammock to camp each night. Tent camping on the wet jungle floor with the creepy crawlies and slithery chaps is a no-no. We were improvising camps in deep jungle locations so you just trimmed off some leaves and vines from between two trees.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Guide Training: Chagres National Park, Panama - Until this stage of the trip my evening routine was a thorough clean of the feet with wet wipes, application of white spirits to help dry and harden the skin, and sleeping or resting with the feet as ‘airy’ as possible at all times. Alas it hadn’t worked. In total about half the group had some signs of jungle rot so, as my journal entry mentioned, we were changing our plan. Initially the plan was to traverse a mountain in the jungle called Cerro Bruja which would require another 2-3 days of progress. Instead, if we did a big push, we could retrace our steps, on known territory at least, to the edge of civilization - a wooden hut on the edge of the jungle where we had based ourselves for the first couple of nights of the trip. The trudge back to this hut was a bit epic. First nervously passing the snake location - it had moved thank Christ - then as the hours rolled by, my feet got ever more painful. Conversation amongst the group got very sparse. Much of the route was wading through rivers, easier going than chopping through jungle, which was relief for the feet in the cool water, but also exacerbated the fungal paradise in my socks. The last hour was a pain cave. I chewed down some ibuprofen flirting with that tricky edge of kidney problems when you’re really dehydrated. Journal thoughts: The last hour was certainly amongst the least comfortable of my life. Death march forward. Had to reach camp. If it had been 5 more km I probably couldn’t have done it.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - “I’ve worked with all the great apes. <image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - Filming Where Few Tread Jungles are not for the faint of heart. Max often spends months at a time in dense tropical forests, carrying heavy gear through unforgiving terrain. On his most challenging shoot in the Congo Basin, his team hiked up to 30 kilometers a day for weeks, carrying up to 25 kilograms each — plus an additional 6 liters of water just to survive the sweltering conditions. “After one shoot in Gabon, it took over two months for the wrinkles in my feet to disappear,” he says with a laugh. “I thought they were going to stay forever.” But for Max, these are more than technical challenges. They’re part of what makes jungle storytelling real — and why the knowledge and support of local jungle guides are not just helpful, but vital. Collaboration, Culture, and Respect “A good relationship with the guides is the most essential thing,” Max explains. “They’re the pros. They often know the animals like they know their own families. The forest is their home.” Throughout his career, Max has depended on the expertise of jungle guides and Indigenous trackers. Their ability to interpret signs, navigate unseen trails, and understand the rhythms of the forest make all the difference — especially in high-stakes environments where orientation and timing are everything. “In one shoot after another, it’s the guides who make it possible,” he says. “Even after months in the jungle, I feel a huge sense of relief when I’m with a tracker I trust. It frees me up to focus on the animals and the story.”</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - The Realities of Life in the Field Max estimates he spends several months a year in the jungle. The longest uninterrupted stretch? Nine months. And no, it wasn’t easy. “Every jungle shoot has its own difficulties,” he says. “Sometimes you’re lucky and it’s relatively comfortable. But most of the time, you walk. And walk. And walk — with 25 kilograms of gear on your back. Some days in the Congo we were hiking 30 kilometers. Add to that six liters of water a day, and it’s a serious physical challenge.” But the biggest obstacle, according to Max, isn’t always the distance — it’s the terrain. “People don’t realize how punishing the ground can be. In swamps or after heavy rain, just standing upright is difficult. Wet feet all day can destroy you. After one shoot in Gabon, the wrinkles in my feet didn’t go away for over two months.” On top of that, there’s the gear: keeping cameras dry, batteries charged, footage safe. And the ever-present unpredictability of wildlife — sometimes waiting weeks to see a single behavior. “The longest I ever waited for a shot was eight weeks,” he says. “You have to be patient. You can’t force nature.”</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - Working with Indigenous Communities Max emphasizes that working with Indigenous communities is one of the most rewarding — and essential — parts of his job. “I really enjoy that side of this work, especially when we can communicate. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but when we share a language — even a bit — something clicks. We move as one team. When the guide and I are on the same mission, everything works better.” This collaboration isn’t just logistical. It’s cultural. Emotional. Spiritual. “Their knowledge isn’t just deep — it’s different. It doesn’t come from books or machines. It’s inherited, lived, felt. It goes beyond what we measure. And it deserves far more recognition.” Max is passionate about seeing guides and local collaborators not just credited, but elevated. “Their voices are the most interesting, and they get way too little recognition or screen time. They are the real experts. Without them, we couldn’t do any of this.”</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - Resilience, Preparation, and Respect Max’s advice to aspiring wildlife filmmakers or jungle professionals? “Be there.” And prepare — in every way. “Stay fit. Get your shots. Break in your gear. Expect everything to go wrong. Expect heat, insects, soaking wet clothes, power outages, delays, and disappointment. And be ready to embrace all of it.” He also recommends having the right essentials: reliable boots, a good rain poncho (or two), a hammock, and whatever you need to care for your feet and body. Oh, and bring patience. “When something breaks or doesn’t go to plan — and it will — chill. Fix what you can. Be calm. Wait for the animals. Don’t rush the jungle.”</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Behind the Lens: Inside the Jungle - Changing the Narrative Through his work, Max hopes to shift how people view the jungle — and the people who live and work in it. “I hope people stop seeing jungles as dangerous or hostile. Yes, they’re wild, but they’re also full of life. They have the most beautiful chorus you’ll ever hear. And the communities that live there? Some of the strongest people I’ve ever met.” His dream is to see more local guides certified, more Indigenous voices in conservation, and more collaborative efforts between storytellers and the stewards of the land. “Jungle guides should be seen as professionals — because that’s what they are. And certification programs that reflect their knowledge, in their language, at a fair price? That’s the kind of thing that changes everything.”</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Calling: A guides story - A Dream Fulfilled in the Wild</image:title>
<image:caption>César’s love for the jungle was rooted in childhood stories — tales from his father that sparked a lifelong curiosity. His first jungle expedition didn’t disappoint. “I’d always heard my dad’s story about his jungle trip. When I was finally there myself, it was unforgettable. Surrounded by dense vegetation and the sound of life all around… I just thought, Wow. How pristine is the jungle, how beautiful is Panama.” Among his many memories, one moment stands out: discovering the Mongará Yarré, a sacred petroglyph known as the Monkey Rock. “The Jungle Treks logo always caught my attention. Rick told me it was a real rock in the jungle. Finally, I was assigned to an expedition with a great team and Embera porters. After three days, we cut through a thick bamboo branch—and there it was. The Mongará Yarré. It was a magical moment.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Calling: A guides story - Guiding with Purpose When asked what advice he would give to aspiring guides, César’s words speak to leadership, empathy, and a deep connection with nature:</image:title>
<image:caption>“Be a good leader. Have the skills to keep your team safe, work closely with local people, communicate well, and love nature.” He believes the most important quality in a jungle guide is the ability to balance leadership with empathy. “You must understand your team’s needs, make decisions without self-judgment, and set limits to maintain harmony. Respect for nature and local cultures is essential.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Calling: A guides story - Honoring Culture and Community For César, guiding is not just about navigating landscapes — it’s about honoring the people who have lived in harmony with the jungle for generations. His work often brings him into close collaboration with Panama’s Indigenous communities, especially the Emberá, whose knowledge, resilience, and connection to the land have left a lasting impression on him. “Local culture is a priceless treasure,” he says. “Understanding it creates an organic connection between visitors and communities. It becomes a true cultural exchange.”</image:title>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67cde00c7d19293278015965/07ea2301-f76b-48d3-9e0a-4af8efa3d841/1000188278.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Voices - Jungle Calling: A guides story - César believes that truly meaningful expeditions go beyond the trail — they foster respect, listening, and shared experience. His partnerships with local guides and porters are built on trust and mutual learning, where ancestral skills are not just helpful, but essential. “One of the most valuable things I’ve learned,” he shares, “is how the Emberá can find old tracks hidden deep in the jungle — trails you’d never think were there. And their dialects carry so much history. Even just a word or phrase can root you in something much bigger.” In his eyes, cultural awareness isn’t an optional extra for guides — it’s a foundational skill. Respecting Indigenous knowledge, understanding local customs, and ensuring that communities benefit from the presence of visitors are all part of the responsibility that comes with leading in the jungle.</image:title>

<image:title>Voices - Jungle Calling: A guides story - A Life in the Jungle</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course, jungle life isn’t without its surprises. César recalls one unforgettable moment with a laugh: “We were on the Camino Real trek with my colleague Kandy Valle when a huge tapir came barreling out of the forest like a rolling boulder. The jungle shook!” Despite the challenges, César always brings along one essential item: his son’s old green coffee mug and fork. “All the teams and Segundo (a fellow guide) call it the ‘baby coffee mug’ — I never go on an expedition without it.” As for food? “Embera red rice with fresh water fish, fried plantains, and habanero sauce. We call it the Jungle Sauce.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Expeditions - Mentawai - Indigenous Jungle Immersion - Your Expedition Leader: Mikel Yaki has been exploring the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and New Guinea since 1990. Driven by a childhood fascination with reptiles—especially Komodo dragons—he transformed his passion into a career guiding adventurous travelers through the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. His survival expertise began in Europe and expanded through extensive time spent learning from Indigenous communities in New Guinea and the Moluccas. In addition to guiding, Mikel works as a professional liaison for international film crews, assisting with permits, logistics, and jungle location scouting. Around the campfire, his vivid stories of jungle adventure never fail to captivate.</image:title>

<image:title>Expeditions - Wild Halmahera: Jungle Immersion & Survival - Indonesia - Your Expedition Leader: Mikel Yaki has been exploring the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and New Guinea since 1990.

<image:title>Expeditions - Camino Real: Historical Field Immersion - Panama - Day 1:</image:title>
<image:caption>Early this morning we board our private van headed for the village of Boqueron Arriba, north of Lake Alajuela, located in one of the most important areas of the Panama Canal Watershed. Travel time is about two hours and the road conditions go from asphalt to dirt road until the path becomes impassable for vehicles. We hike up to a ridge fringing the Boqueron River, where we immediately encounter archeological evidence of the ancient Camino Real. After approximately 8 Km (5 miles) we arrive at the small village of Santa Librada. We get acquainted with our jungle camping equipment and spend the night there, ready for an exciting day tomorrow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Expeditions - Camino Real: Historical Field Immersion - Panama - Day 2:</image:title>
<image:caption>We begin our journey hiking through farmland and scattered thatch huts, gradually entering less developed areas until we reach the pristine rainforest of Chagres National Park. Along the way, we cross the Boqueron River multiple times, pausing to interpret the natural surroundings and visible remnants of the historic Camino Real. These stops also help us acclimate to the jungle’s heat and humidity, with occasional swims in crystal-clear river pools. Mornings are usually sunny, with brief afternoon showers—being wet is part of the experience. After 10 km (6 miles), we arrive at “Ambush Falls,” where the river splits into three small waterfalls and forms a tranquil pool beside a wide beach. It’s the perfect place to camp and relax after a rewarding day’s hike.</image:caption>

<image:title>Expeditions - Camino Real: Historical Field Immersion - Panama - Day 3:</image:title>
<image:caption>Today we get ready to traverse the most dense and technical section of the trek. We hike through very pristine and lush primary forest; climb a ridge following the pass that the Spaniards cross centuries ago carrying their precious cargo of silver and gold. We camp in the jungle again, and spend the last hours of daylight telling stories of Spaniards and pirates before retiring to a well-deserved slumber.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The fourth and last day, after a delicious cup of jungle coffee and a hearty breakfast, we break camp and proceed to trek 13 Km (8 miles) to the outskirts of Portobelo. Here we enjoy a great lunch, accompanied by a cold beer. We can change into our spare set of street clothes and ride our van back to Panama City.</image:caption>
