International Association of Jungle Guides

The International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) is an independent, professional body governed by a board of volunteer directors. It exists to set and uphold international standards for jungle guiding, safety, and ethical operations, supporting guides, instructors, and training providers worldwide through transparent, industry-led certification.

Overview, Governance & Policy

  • To advance and uphold the global profession of jungle guiding through internationally recognized standards, professional certification, ethical practice, and continuous professional development.

IAJG exists to establish the standards that define professional jungle guiding worldwide. Through Jungle Guides International (JGI) and a network of accredited training providers, we promote best practices in jungle guiding, outdoor education, and jungle risk management, ensuring the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and environmental responsibility.

Working in partnership with local communities, industry operators, conservation organizations, and field professionals, we support the development of best practices, professional pathways, and sustainable infrastructure that strengthen the growing jungle tourism sector while creating positive outcomes for people, communities, and the world's tropical ecosystems.

  • A world where professional jungle guides are recognized as trusted leaders in safety, education, conservation, and cultural stewardship.

We envision a globally connected profession supported by internationally recognized standards, accessible professional pathways, and a shared commitment to excellence. Through this vision, jungle guides help create safer experiences, stronger local economies, more responsible tourism practices, and better outcomes for the world's tropical ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

  • Jungle environments are among the most complex and challenging places on Earth to work, guide, and explore, yet there has historically been no internationally recognized body responsible for defining and advancing the profession of jungle guiding.

We exist to fill that gap.

Our purpose is to establish and maintain professional standards, promote best practices in jungle guiding, outdoor education, and jungle risk management, and support the development of competent professionals who can operate safely, ethically, and responsibly in tropical environments. By bringing together guides, training providers, operators, conservation organizations, researchers, and local communities, we help strengthen the jungle tourism sector while creating lasting benefits for people, livelihoods, and the protection of tropical ecosystems worldwide.

  • Who oversees the association?
Jungle Guides International is based in Nova Scotia, Canada, and is the legal entity behind the initiative. The Volunteer Association (IAJG) is overseen by an elected board of directors composed of experienced industry professionals who volunteer their time.

Why is a jungle-focused organization based in Canada?
Operating an international organization from Canada helps us effectively navigate the complex social, legal, and bureaucratic challenges often present in tropical developing countries. Our partners and local communities specifically encouraged us to base operations externally, enabling smoother processes, greater transparency, and wider recognition. Additionally, international clients often seek certifications from organizations based in stable jurisdictions, providing greater confidence in certification quality and standards. This structure allows us to responsibly bridge global standards and local expertise.

  • Where can I find the association’s code of conduct and professional standards?
All relevant policies, guidelines, and codes of conduct are available for download in the members area, or to read on the homepage.

Does the association provide insurance or guidance on liability and risk management?
While we don’t provide direct insurance coverage, we offer guidance, industry-standard resources, and recommended practices for managing liability and risk in outdoor and wilderness settings.

How are membership fees utilized by the association?
Membership fees directly support the creation and provision of educational resources, advocacy, research, member events, professional development, and operational administration costs.

CERTIFICATION PATHWAY, STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS

Internationally recognized professional training and certifications.

IAJG establishes professional standards and certification pathways for individuals working, guiding, leading, and operating in tropical environments. Our certifications provide a structured pathway for developing competence, demonstrating professional capability, and maintaining industry-recognized standards throughout a career in jungle guiding.

Whether you are entering the profession, leading expeditions, supporting conservation projects, or operating tourism experiences, IAJG certifications provide a benchmark for safety, leadership, environmental stewardship, and professional conduct.

  • Certification demonstrates that an individual has met established standards in the knowledge, skills, judgment, and professional behaviors required to operate in remote jungle environments.

    Benefits of Certification

    • Demonstrate professional competence

    • Improve employability and career opportunities

    • Build confidence in remote environments

    • Enhance safety and risk management capabilities

    • Gain recognition within the global guiding community

    • Maintain professional standards through ongoing development

    • Join a network of like-minded professionals and organizations

    • Global First: The only international certification program designed specifically for jungle and tropical environments.

    • Built by Experts: Our team includes world-class expedition leaders, Indigenous instructors, tropical medicine specialists, and outdoor educators.

    • Field-Tested: Our programs are actively used by guides across Latin America and the Caribbean—from national parks to remote eco-lodges.

    • Culturally Grounded: We are the first certification body to integrate remote Indigenous knowledge into wilderness standards.

    • Aligned with Global Best Practices: Based on international risk, rescue, and medical protocols, tailored for the jungle.

  • Our certifications align with recognized industry standards and best practices while uniquely specializing in jungle and tropical environments, and operating in harmony with the local population. Operating in Jungle environments is typically much more complex, and this organization has been developed by specialists in the industry to help everyone involved navigate these complexities. This certification is the first to specifically integrate and support the knowledge of remote Indigenous communities who live in jungle regions. It focuses on the specialized skills and insights required to navigate jungle-specific challenges, aspects that broader wilderness certifications typically do not fully address, and is the product of jungle guides and local populations requests for a body that works specifically for them.

  • Certification boosts your marketability, making you stand out in a competitive industry. It helps attract more clients by showcasing your professional standards and expertise, building trust and confidence. Additionally, certification can offer legal aid by demonstrating adherence to recognized safety and risk management standards, potentially reducing liability risks. Ultimately, certification enhances your reputation, drives business growth, and solidifies your professional standing.

Speciality Certification Courses

Specialized certification courses in jungle medicine and first aid—equipping healthcare providers, guides, and operators with the skills to respond confidently in remote tropical environments.

Jungle First Aid

The Jungle First Aid certification is a specialized training program developed for professionals operating in remote jungle environments.

Unlike generic urban first aid courses, Jungle First Aid focuses on:

  • Remote risk assessment and incident prevention

  • Snakebite and envenomation management

  • Trauma stabilization in delayed-evacuation settings

  • Tropical illness recognition and response

  • Evacuation planning and communication protocols

  • Operating safely within a defined non-clinical scope

  • Designed specifically for expedition leaders, jungle guides, conservation teams, film crews, researchers, and NGO personnel, the program addresses the unique medical realities of tropical and austere terrain — where delayed evacuation, environmental hazards, and limited resources require calm, structured decision-making.

The course emphasizes practical judgment, clear protocols, and conservative decision-making appropriate to expedition environments.

It is structured to strengthen professional readiness while reinforcing ethical responsibility and duty of care in high-risk settings.

    Scope & Certification Status

The Jungle First Aid certification is a structured educational program designed to provide non-medical professionals with foundational emergency response skills specific to jungle and remote expedition environments.

    The certification:

    • Is educational in nature

    • Does not confer medical licensure

    • Does not authorize invasive medical procedures

    • Does not replace nationally regulated first aid qualifications where such certification is legally required

    • Does not guarantee recognition by employers, governments, or regulatory authorities

Certification is valid for three (3) years from the date of issue and requires reassessment for renewal.

Individuals remain responsible for ensuring that their certification meets the legal and workplace requirements of the jurisdiction in which they operate.

IAJG and JGI do not warrant that this certification fulfills statutory occupational health and safety standards in all regions.

Jungle Medicine & Basic Survival

Built specifically for tropical environments, this internationally recognized certification prepares healthcare professionals, guides, tourism professionals, conservation workers, researchers, and adventurers to respond effectively to medical emergencies in the jungle.

This training is delivered in partnership with Endeavour Medical (UK).

Focus Areas:

  • Earn CME credits

  • Patient assessment

  • Trauma management

  • Environmental emergencies

  • Prolonged care

  • Evacuation planning

  • The International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) supports Continuing Medical Education (CME) programming for qualified medical professionals operating in remote and jungle environments.

The purpose of this partnership is to:

    • Provide structured remote and expedition medicine training for licensed healthcare professionals

    • Enhance clinical decision-making in austere and jungle environments

    • Bridge conventional emergency medicine with expeditionary operational realities

    • Support physicians, paramedics, nurses, and advanced practitioners preparing for field deployment

CME programming is designed specifically for:

    • Medical professionals supporting expeditions

    • Film and television productions operating in remote terrain

    • Conservation and research teams

    • NGO and humanitarian deployments in jungle regions

All CME content delivered under this partnership:

    • Is intended for appropriately licensed healthcare professionals

    • Does not alter or replace national licensure requirements

    • Is delivered in accordance with applicable UK CME frameworks where relevant

    • Maintains clear separation from non-medical Jungle Guide certifications

IAJG does not represent CME training as medical licensure, nor does it authorize independent medical practice beyond the participant’s existing professional registration.

This partnership strengthens the Association’s commitment to raising professional standards across both guiding and expedition medicine sectors.

Medical Governance & Oversight

  • The International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) maintains a structured medical governance framework to ensure that all medical content, training standards, and field protocols delivered under its certification pathways meet appropriate international best practice standards for remote and jungle environments.

The purpose of this section is to clearly define:

    • The role of the Medical Director

    • The scope of medical oversight

    • Currency and review requirements

    • Governance boundaries and limitations

  • IAJG appoints a Medical Director to provide independent clinical oversight of medical curriculum, protocols, and standards.

    Medical Director:
    Dr. Duncan Gray

The Medical Director provides advisory oversight to ensure:

    • Clinical accuracy of first aid and medical training materials

    • Alignment with recognized wilderness and remote medicine principles

    • Appropriate scope of practice for non-medical jungle guides

    • Ethical and responsible presentation of medical guidance

The Medical Director does not provide real-time telemedicine for expeditions unless separately contracted in a private capacity.

  • Medical oversight applies to:

    • Jungle First Aid curriculum

    • Advanced Jungle First Aid curriculum

    • Medical protocols referenced within guiding standards

    • Risk management frameworks where medical decision-making is involved

    • Updates to snakebite, tropical disease, trauma, and evacuation protocols

    Oversight includes structured review of:

    • Learning objectives

    • Assessment questions

    • Field protocols

    • Public-facing medical guidance

  • To maintain clinical integrity and relevance:

    • Core medical content is reviewed at a minimum of every 3 years, or sooner if significant changes in international guidance occur.

    • High-risk protocols (e.g., snakebite, dengue management, anaphylaxis, CPR standards) are reviewed periodically in alignment with updates from recognized bodies such as wilderness medical authorities.

    • Any substantive protocol change must be documented and version controlled.

Where relevant, IAJG may reference guidance from internationally recognized wilderness and remote medicine bodies; however, IAJG maintains independent operational standards specific to jungle environments.

  • IAJG certifications:

    • Do not confer medical licensure

    • Do not authorize invasive medical procedures

    • Do not replace formal paramedic, nursing, or physician training

Certified Jungle Guides are trained to:

    • Provide non-invasive first aid within defined scope

    • Stabilize and manage patients in remote settings

    • Initiate evacuation procedures

    • Communicate effectively with higher-level medical support

All medical interventions must remain within the scope defined in the relevant certification level.

  • Guides operating under IAJG certification are expected to:

    • Act conservatively when medical uncertainty exists

    • Prioritize evacuation over field treatment when risk thresholds are exceeded

    • Document incidents appropriately

    • Maintain current certification and recertification requirements

Failure to operate within defined medical scope may result in review or revocation of certification.

  • The Medical Director functions in an advisory and governance capacity and does not assume operational liability for individual expeditions.

IAJG operates as an independent professional body governed by volunteer directors. Medical oversight supports the integrity of standards but does not replace the legal responsibilities of expedition operators, employers, or local authorities.

  • All training materials, protocols, and standards published by the International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) are provided for educational purposes only.

IAJG, Jungle Guides International (JGI), its directors, Medical Director, training partners, and affiliated instructors:

    • Do not assume operational control over expeditions

    • Do not provide real-time medical oversight unless separately contracted

    • Do not accept liability for actions taken by certified individuals

    • Do not guarantee outcomes in field or medical situations

Certified individuals remain solely responsible for:

    • Their operational decisions

    • Acting within their defined scope of practice

    • Compliance with local laws and regulations

    • Obtaining appropriate insurance coverage

Participation in training programs constitutes acknowledgment that jungle travel and expedition environments carry inherent risks that cannot be eliminated.

IAJG and JGI expressly disclaim liability to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
