CERTIFICATION & CURRENCY REQUIREMENTS
Your accredited IAJG certification program is designed to be accessible to people from all walks of life—whether you're from a remote jungle village with limited financial means or a bustling city in a developed nation, there's a path forward for you. To support this, we offer two distinct avenues: a traditional Course Certification Route, and a more flexible, experience-based Mentorship Pathway. While these certifications are designed as a progressive pathway, entry may occur at any level based on prior experience, training, or professional background. JGI courses are open to candidates from a range of professional backgrounds. Certifications are awarded based on demonstrated competence, not attendance alone.
Certification Levels Explained

The Certificate of Jungle Guiding is the foundational certificate of competence for those ready to take their jungle expeditionary knowledge to the next level.
Whether you’re guiding film crews, leading adventure tourists, supporting research teams, or preparing for remote logistics operations, this course gives you the confidence of knowledge, and credibility to begin planning a leading safely, responsibly, and professionally in the world’s most demanding rainforest environments.
Progression to Certified Jungle Guide can be achieved either through our mentorship program, taking Assistant Jungle Guide Field Training and having an IAJG certified Instructor endorse your skills, knowledge and professionalism or by successfully completing a Jungle Guide field Course.

Description
The Assistant Jungle Guide certification program is designed for those who want to take an in depth and hands-on route into certification as a Jungle Guide and build a solid foundation in jungle operations, safety, and expeditionary awareness under the experienced leadership of an IAJG Jungle Guide or certified Instructor.
This certification is mandatory for those wishing to enter into the Jungle Guide Mentorship Program who have not taken the Certificate of Jungle Guiding, who are not already Certified Jungle Guides. This certification assures essential baseline knowledge to get you started, to ensure you are prepared, and to ensure your mentor has a baseline of knowledge to build on.
This certification is not required for those planning to attend a full Certified Jungle Guide course, as these foundational topics are included there, however it is strongly recommended for those looking to seriously dive into the career of Jungle Guiding.
Certification Currency

Knowledge testing
Candidates must first successfully complete an approved knowledge curriculum course through either the International Jungle Guides Association, an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner to include the following jungle region specific subject matter. This knowledge may be delivered through an online or digital course platform or in-class / in-person.
Skills testing
Candidates must then successfully apply tested knowledge and jungle specific practical leadership skills through either the International Jungle Guides Association, an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner, in an approved field setting over a multi-day expedition scenario. Field testing may be delivered in-person only. Course schedule and curriculum and testing must be association approved.
Candidates that have successfully completed both knowledge and skills testing will be granted Certified Assistant Jungle Guide status.
Hybrid testing
Combined Knowledge and field testing may be conducted as approved by the International Jungle Guides Association.
Challenging Certification Requirements
Candidates may challenge knowledge testing by contacting the International Jungle Guides Association for more information on requirements for proof of competency. Skills testing can only be done in person as approved by the International Jungle Guides Association, by an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner.
Certification fee: USD$150. Valid for three (3) years.
Recertification and Currency Requirements
Assistant Jungle Guides must maintain a high degree of professionalism, respect for nature, peoples, cultures and clients. They will adhere to International Jungle Guides Association Rules, Regulations, Policies and Ethos. They will operate solely within their experience, physical capability, competency and certification level.
Recertification
Assistant Jungle Guides must recertify every three (3) years from the date of certification issuance, only through the International Jungle Guides Association. To be eligible, two expeditions must have been led over the past 3 years of certification. Recertification fee:
CAD$150. Recertification fee includes annual membership dues, recertification administration, and three (3) years of certification.
First Aid Currency
Assistant Jungle Guides must maintain valid and applicable first aid training certification relative to their operation, as offered and available in their respective region(s) of operation. Proof of first aid certification must be available upon request by the association, and included in any certification application, or recertification application.
Regular spot checks or audits
In order for the International Jungle Guides Association to maintain international credibility among its certified guides, instructors, staff and training partners, all persons holding certification, approvals or training partner status must be available and willing to undergo regular random spot checks whether in person or otherwise, by the International Jungle Guides Association, or designated person(s) thereof.
Failure to comply with Association Currency Requirements may result in the member(s) being stripped of certification.
Clear process to address non-compliance:
Written warning → Probation → Certification suspension or expulsion.

They may participate in International Jungle Guides Association curriculum development in discussion with Certified Jungle Guide Instructors. They may lead training and expeditions on behalf of the association, as employed by the association to do so. Certified Jungle Guides must adhere to the International Jungle Guides Association currency requirements.

Certified Specialist Jungle Guides may lead training and expeditions in Jungle, Tropical and Rainforest Regions not exceeding their certification and competency level. They may mentor non-certified AND Certified Jungle Guides in their Specialization(s).
They may certify candidates in their specialization(s) if instruction is delivered under the supervision of a Qualified Certified Jungle Guide Instructor, delivered by an authorized training partner or the International Jungle Guides Association.
They may wear or otherwise display International Jungle Guides Association logos and media in a professional manner and context on clothing, marketing material and digital marketing platforms, as approved by the association.
They may participate in International Jungle Guides Association curriculum development in discussion with Certified Jungle Guide Instructors. They may lead specialist training and expeditions on behalf of the association, as employed by the association to do so. Certified Specialist Jungle Guides must adhere to the International Jungle Guides Association currency requirements.
Certification Currency
Each Specializations’ delivery method will differ in curriculum. Each course curriculum will be approved by the Association. Delivery methods may be one or a combination of the following:
Knowledge testing:
Candidates successfully complete an approved knowledge curriculum course specific to the specialization through either the International Jungle Guides Association, an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner. This knowledge may be delivered through an online or digital course platform or in-class / in-person.
Skills testing:
Candidates successfully apply knowledge and skills specific to the specialization through either the International Jungle Guides Association, an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner, in an approved field setting over a multi-day expedition scenario. Field testing may be delivered in-person only. Course schedule and curriculum and testing must be association approved.
Hybrid testing:
Combined Knowledge and field testing may be conducted as approved by the International Jungle Guides Association.
Challenging Certification Requirements:
Candidates may challenge knowledge testing by contacting the International Jungle Guides Association for more information on requirements for proof of competency. Skills testing can only be done in person as approved by the International Jungle Guides Association, by an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner.
Certification fee: USD$125 per Specialization.
Recertification and Currency Requirements:
Certified Specialist Jungle Guides must maintain a high degree of professionalism, respect for nature, peoples, cultures and clients. They will adhere to International Jungle Guides Association Rules, Regulations, Policies and Ethos. They will operate solely within their experience, physical capability, competency and certification level.
Recertification
Certified Specialist Jungle Guides must recertify every three (3) years from the date of certification issuance, only through the International Jungle Guides Association. To be eligible, two expeditions must have been lead OR two(2) specialist courses must have been taught over the past 3 years of certification. Recertification fee: USD$150. Recertification fee includes annual membership dues, recertification administration, and three (3) years of Specialized certification, to include multiple specializations.
First Aid Currency
Certified Specialist Jungle Guides must maintain valid and applicable first aid training certification relative to their operation, as offered and available in their respective region(s) of operation. Proof of first aid certification must be available upon request by the association, and included in any certification application, or recertification application.
Regular spot checks or audits
In order for the International Jungle Guides Association to maintain international credibility among its certified guides, instructors, staff and training partners, all persons holding certification, approvals or training partner status must be available and willing to undergo regular random spot checks whether in person or otherwise, by the International Jungle Guides Association, or designated person(s) thereof.

They may educate, mentor and assess candidates in knowledge-testing and skills-testing.
They may wear or otherwise display International Jungle Guides Association logos and media in a professional manner and context on clothing, marketing material and digital marketing platforms, as approved by the association.
They may participate in International Jungle Guides Association curriculum development, Rules, Regulations and Ethos development in discussion with Association Directors and Training Partners. They may lead training and expeditions on behalf of the association, as employed by the association to do so. Certified Jungle Guide Instructors will maintain a high degree of professionalism, and strive to lead as an example of association rules, regulations and ethos.
Certification:
Eligibility:
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years as a Certified Jungle Guide, 1 year of which must be under the supervision of a Certified Jungle Guide Instructor. Candidates must apply to the International Jungle Guides Association in writing to prove eligibility to become a Certified Jungle Guide Instructor. They must be able to prove Jungle specific experience, professionalism, competency and a thorough understanding of the International Jungle Guides Association rules, policies and ethos. Candidates may be subject to a face-to-face interview or interviews.
Knowledge testing:
Candidates must first successfully complete an approved knowledge curriculum course through either the International Jungle Guides Association, an International Jungle Guides Association Certified Jungle Guide Instructor or through an approved Training Partner. This knowledge may be delivered through an online or digital course platform or in-class / in-person.

The International Jungle Guides Association reserves the right to allow certified persons or entities operated by or employing certified persons, to operate in a professional capacity under the banner of the association, in order to earn monetary profits from expeditions, trainings and or certifications as overseen and offered through the International Jungle Guides Association.
Training partners may advertise, profit from and lead training and expeditions in Jungle, Tropical and Rainforest Regions not exceeding their certification and competency level, to include training and certifying Certified Jungle Guides and, on a case by case basis, Certified Jungle Guide Instructors. They may educate, mentor and assess candidates in knowledge-testing and skills-testing.

Training Partners will pay an annual fee of USD$500 to maintain active training partner status.

Eligibility:
Certified Specialist Jungle Guides and Certified Specialist Jungle Guide Instructors who have held certification for three (3) years, have proven participation in association curriculum discussion and development are eligible to apply to become a Director.
Eligible applications may be made to the International Jungle Guides Association in writing. Applications will be addressed at the next available Directors meeting.
Medical Governance & Oversight

The Jungle First Aid certification is a specialized training program developed for professionals operating in remote jungle environments.
Designed specifically for expedition leaders, jungle guides, conservation teams, film crews, researchers, and NGO personnel, the program addresses the unique medical realities of tropical and austere terrain — where delayed evacuation, environmental hazards, and limited resources require calm, structured decision-making.
Unlike generic urban first aid courses, Jungle First Aid focuses on:
Remote risk assessment and incident prevention
Snakebite and envenomation management
Trauma stabilization in delayed-evacuation settings
Tropical illness recognition and response
Evacuation planning and communication protocols
Operating safely within a defined non-clinical scope
The course emphasizes practical judgment, clear protocols, and conservative decision-making appropriate to expedition environments.
It is structured to strengthen professional readiness while reinforcing ethical responsibility and duty of care in high-risk settings.
Scope & Certification Status
The Jungle First Aid certification is a structured educational program designed to provide non-medical professionals with foundational emergency response skills specific to jungle and remote expedition environments.
The certification:
Is educational in nature
Does not confer medical licensure
Does not authorize invasive medical procedures
Does not replace nationally regulated first aid qualifications where such certification is legally required
Does not guarantee recognition by employers, governments, or regulatory authorities
Certification is valid for three (3) years from the date of issue and requires reassessment for renewal.
Individuals remain responsible for ensuring that their certification meets the legal and workplace requirements of the jurisdiction in which they operate.
IAJG and JGI do not warrant that this certification fulfills statutory occupational health and safety standards in all regions.

The International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) maintains a structured medical governance framework to ensure that all medical content, training standards, and field protocols delivered under its certification pathways meet appropriate international best practice standards for remote and jungle environments.

Medical Director:

The Medical Director does not provide real-time telemedicine for expeditions unless separately contracted in a private capacity.

To maintain clinical integrity and relevance:
Core medical content is reviewed at a minimum of every 3 years, or sooner if significant changes in international guidance occur.
High-risk protocols (e.g., snakebite, dengue management, anaphylaxis, CPR standards) are reviewed periodically in alignment with updates from recognized bodies such as wilderness medical authorities.
Any substantive protocol change must be documented and version controlled.
Where relevant, IAJG may reference guidance from internationally recognized wilderness and remote medicine bodies; however, IAJG maintains independent operational standards specific to jungle environments.

Act conservatively when medical uncertainty exists

The Medical Director functions in an advisory and governance capacity and does not assume operational liability for individual expeditions.
IAJG operates as an independent professional body governed by volunteer directors. Medical oversight supports the integrity of standards but does not replace the legal responsibilities of expedition operators, employers, or local authorities.

In addition to first aid training for jungle guides, the International Association of Jungle Guides (IAJG) supports Continuing Medical Education (CME) programming for qualified medical professionals operating in remote and jungle environments.
This training is delivered in partnership with Endeavour Medical (UK).
The purpose of this partnership is to:
Provide structured remote and expedition medicine training for licensed healthcare professionals
Enhance clinical decision-making in austere and jungle environments
Bridge conventional emergency medicine with expeditionary operational realities
Support physicians, paramedics, nurses, and advanced practitioners preparing for field deployment
CME programming is designed specifically for:
Medical professionals supporting expeditions
Film and television productions operating in remote terrain
Conservation and research teams
NGO and humanitarian deployments in jungle regions
All CME content delivered under this partnership:
Is intended for appropriately licensed healthcare professionals
Does not alter or replace national licensure requirements
Is delivered in accordance with applicable UK CME frameworks where relevant
Maintains clear separation from non-medical Jungle Guide certifications
IAJG does not represent CME training as medical licensure, nor does it authorize independent medical practice beyond the participant’s existing professional registration.

Certification
How does your certification work?
There are two paths to becoming certified:
Mentorship program. This is much like an apprenticeship program where first you learn the knowledge in the Assistant Guide Course, then we find and match you up with a working Jungle Guide, who takes you under their wing, and you put your knowledge into practice. Your mentor works with you to ensure you leave with the skills and knowledge to lead expeditions on your own.
Field Course. You take a Jungle Guide certification course. Upon successful completion, you are granted certification as a jungle guide, and your exciting journey into certified expedition leading begins!
